Salt creep and fingerprints on the front glass spoil the view more often than algae on the inside of it. Aqua Medic Aqua Smoothy 40 X 40cm (2 Pcs) (SKU: AM66100) is Aqua Medic’s microfibre glass cloth, a pack of two superfine, microporous cloths made for smear-free cleaning of the outside glass of an aquarium. Aqua Medic describes them as lint-free and very absorbent, for use either wet or dry, and says they remove salt encrustation and greasy residues safely and gently without any aggressive cleaning agent. Each cloth measures about 40 × 40 cm, big enough to fold into a thick pad that covers a whole panel in a few passes.

The fibre is a blend of 80% polyester and 20% polyamide, the usual make-up of a fine microfibre that lifts film from glass with plain water. Cleaning without sprays matters around an aquarium: household glass cleaners and detergents can drift onto the lid, the water surface or the light, and nothing has to be added here but water. On a reef tank, a dampened cloth softens and lifts the white crust left by salt spray along the top of the glass, and a dry cloth then buffs away the last streaks and any fingerprints. Aqua Medic adds that the cloths suit most other smooth surfaces as well, so the same pack covers cover glasses, lids, cabinet doors and the outside of light units. With two in the pack, one can stay damp for the first pass while the other stays dry for polishing. Rinse them after use and wash without fabric softener, which coats the fibres and leaves smears behind.
