Yellow-tinted water, the last traces of a medication course and a faint haze are all jobs for activated carbon, and the pellet size decides which filter it suits. Aqua Medic Carbolit 500g/700ml 4mm Pellet (SKU: AB12518) is the 500 g pack of Aqua Medic’s carbolit in its coarse 4 mm pellet, maker’s item 12518, a highly efficient activated carbon for salt and fresh water aquaria. Aqua Medic states that carbolit quickly cleans up aquarium water, removing colouring substances, turbidity and medication residues, as well as the yellowing substances that build up over time. The 500 g of pellets fills about 700 mL, slightly more than the same weight of the fine 1.5 mm grade, because larger pellets pack less tightly.

The 4 mm pellet leaves wide gaps between pieces, so water passes through a bed or a bag with little resistance. That suits canister filters, hang-on filters, filter baskets and mesh bags in a sump, where a fine carbon would compact and slow the flow; the 1.5 mm grade, with more surface per gram, is generally the pick for fluidised reactors. Aqua Medic adds that carbolit can also be used as a long-term filter material: after a short period bacteria settle on the pellets, so the carbon works as a biological filter as well. It is pH neutral and suits saltwater and freshwater alike. Aqua Medic gives no fixed dose; a common approach is to run a measured portion continuously and renew it every four to six weeks, or to add a fresh batch once a medication course is finished. Rinse the pellets before use to remove dust, and take carbon out of the filter while a medication is being dosed, since it will remove the treatment too.
