WYSIWYG — What You See Is What You Get The coral in the photos is the exact specimen you will receive. Our photos are taken under medium blue reef lighting to represent the coral as accurately as possible to the naked eye. Colours may appear slightly different under your specific lighting setup. If you have any questions about colouration or would like additional photos before purchasing, please contact us — we're happy to help.

Zoanthids — affectionately known as Zoas in the hobby — are one of the most diverse, colourful, and collectable corals in the reef keeping world. From electric neons and deep jewel tones to intricate multicoloured patterns with contrasting skirts and centres, the variety of Zoa morphs available is virtually limitless. No other coral category offers the same breadth of colour, pattern, and naming culture that makes zoanthid collecting one of the most addictive aspects of the hobby.

Available as single polyp frags through to established multi-polyp colonies, Zoas are prized by beginners for their hardiness and ease of care, and by experienced collectors for the endless pursuit of rare, designer, and named morphs. A well-established zoa garden — a diverse colony of different morphs growing together across rockwork — is one of the most visually striking features a reef tank can have.

Hardy, fast growing, and forgiving of less than perfect conditions, zoanthids are one of the best value corals you can add to any reef — from a first tank to a mature collector system.

Care Guide

  • Care level: Beginner — one of the most forgiving and adaptable corals in the hobby
  • Lighting: Low to high — zoanthids are remarkably adaptable to a wide range of lighting intensities. Most morphs do well under medium lighting. Some designer morphs express their best colour under lower indirect light while others intensify under stronger lighting. Experiment with placement to find what brings out the best colour in your specific morph
  • Flow: Low to moderate — gentle to moderate indirect flow keeps zoas clean and encourages polyp extension. Avoid strong direct flow which can prevent polyps from opening fully
  • Placement: Highly flexible — zoanthids can be placed across the full range of the tank from sandbed to upper rockwork depending on lighting preferences. They will spread naturally across rockwork and frag plugs over time
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive — zoanthids spread readily and can overtake slower growing neighbours over time. Monitor placement and frag regularly to control spread. Some Palythoa species can sting neighbouring corals
  • Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic. Zoanthids can benefit from light feeding with fine particulate reef foods such as reef roids or phytoplankton but will thrive under good lighting without target feeding. Feeding encourages faster spreading and larger polyp size

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • Calcium: 380–430ppm
  • Alkalinity: 7–10 dKH
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350ppm
  • Nitrate: 5–20ppm (zoanthids are tolerant of a wide nutrient range — they do not require the ultra-low nutrients of SPS corals)
  • Phosphate: 0.05–0.15ppm

Note: Zoanthids can occasionally close up for days at a time when adjusting to a new tank environment. This is normal behaviour — allow 1-2 weeks for new specimens to fully settle and open consistently before assessing their health.
