WYSIWYG — What You See Is What You Get The coral in the photos is the exact specimen you will receive. Our photos are taken under medium blue reef lighting to represent the coral as accurately as possible to the naked eye. Colours may appear slightly different under your specific lighting setup. If you have any questions about colouration or would like additional photos before purchasing, please contact us — we're happy to help.

Goniopora — commonly known as Goni, Flowerpot coral, or Ball coral in the hobby — is one of the most visually captivating LPS corals available. When fully extended, Goniopora produces hundreds of long flowing polyps that sway gently with the current, creating a mesmerising carpet-like appearance that draws the eye unlike almost any other coral in a reef tank.

Available in a wide range of colours — greens, pinks, purples, reds, and multicoloured varieties — each Goniopora specimen has its own distinct character and presence. A healthy, fully extended Goniopora in a well-maintained reef is one of the most striking and conversation-starting corals you can own.

Goniopora has historically had a reputation for being difficult to keep long term. Advances in reef keeping husbandry, understanding of their nutritional needs, and improved water quality management mean that modern reef keepers with stable, well-maintained systems are achieving excellent long term results. That said, Goniopora is best suited to reef keepers who are confident in their water quality and committed to regular target feeding.

Care Guide

  • Care level: Moderate to Advanced — best suited to reef keepers with stable, established systems and consistent husbandry practices
  • Lighting: Low to medium — Goniopora prefers indirect, moderate light. Avoid placing directly under high intensity LED spots which can cause polyp retraction and bleaching. Lower to mid rockwork in areas of indirect light works best
  • Flow: Low to moderate — gentle, indirect, random flow encourages full polyp extension. Strong direct flow will cause polyps to retract and can stress the coral significantly. Laminar flow should be avoided — random turbulent flow is preferable
  • Placement: Lower to mid rockwork or sandbed where the full polyp extension can be appreciated and the coral is protected from strong direct flow. Allow adequate space around the colony as the extended polyps reach significantly further than the skeleton suggests
  • Temperament: Moderately aggressive — extended polyps can reach and sting neighbouring corals. Allow adequate spacing and plan placement with full extension in mind
  • Feeding: Feeding is critical for long term Goniopora success. Target feed with fine particulate foods such as reef roids, phytoplankton, oyster eggs, or coral frenzy 3-5 times per week. Feed after lights dim when polyps are fully extended and actively feeding. Consistent regular feeding is the single most important factor in keeping Goniopora healthy and thriving long term

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • Calcium: 380–430ppm
  • Alkalinity: 8–11 dKH
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350ppm
  • Nitrate: 5–15ppm (Goniopora benefits from slightly elevated nutrients compared to SPS corals — ultra low nutrient systems are not ideal)
  • Phosphate: 0.05–0.10ppm

Note: Goniopora is sensitive to rapid parameter changes and poor water quality. Stability is the most important factor in their long term success. Acclimate new specimens slowly using the drip method and allow 2-4 weeks for the coral to fully settle into your system before assessing its health. It is normal for Goniopora to show reduced polyp extension during the acclimation period.
