Mushroom corals are one of the most rewarding corals you can add to a reef tank. Hardy, low maintenance, and available in an extraordinary range of colours and textures — from smooth metallic discs to heavily textured rhodactis varieties — mushrooms bring colour and movement to areas of the tank that other corals often can't thrive in.
They're an excellent choice for beginner reef keepers building their first tank, and equally popular with experienced reefers hunting specific colour morphs and designer varieties. A well-placed mushroom coral will spread naturally over time, making them one of the best value additions to any reef.
Care Guide
- Care level: Beginner — one of the most forgiving corals in the hobby
- Lighting: Low to medium — mushrooms prefer indirect, lower intensity light. Avoid placing directly under high intensity LED spots
- Flow: Low — gentle indirect flow is ideal. Strong direct flow will cause them to retract and stress
- Placement: Lower rockwork or shaded areas. They will naturally move to find their preferred position over time
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive — mushrooms can sting neighbouring corals and will spread if conditions suit them. Allow adequate spacing from other corals
- Feeding: Not required — mushrooms are photosynthetic and will thrive under appropriate lighting without target feeding. Occasional light feeding with reef roids or similar can encourage faster growth

- Alkalinity: 7–10 dKH
- Magnesium: 1250–1350ppm
- Nitrate: 5–20ppm (mushrooms actually prefer slightly elevated nutrients compared to SPS corals)
- Phosphate: 0.05–0.10ppm
