WYSIWYG — What You See Is What You Get The coral in the photos is the exact specimen you will receive. Our photos are taken under medium blue reef lighting to represent the coral as accurately as possible to the naked eye. Colours may appear slightly different under your specific lighting setup. If you have any questions about colouration or would like additional photos before purchasing, please contact us — we're happy to help

Scolymia are among the most visually striking and highly collectable LPS corals in the reef keeping hobby. Known for their bold, swirling colour patterns, deep jewel tones, and distinctive single or multi-mouthed disc form, a quality scoly is the kind of coral that draws your eye every single time you look at your tank.

Native to Australian waters, Scolymia — often referred to as Scoly or Aussie Scoly in the hobby — are particularly prized for their extraordinary range of colour morphs. From deep reds, purples, and greens to stunning multicoloured specimens with contrasting rings, spots, and patterns, no two scoly corals are truly alike. Collector grade specimens are among the most sought after and valuable pieces in the reef keeping world.

A slow growing solitary coral, scoly corals make a dramatic focal point when placed prominently on the sandbed or lower rockwork where their full disc can be appreciated. They are a statement piece — the kind of coral serious reef keepers actively hunt for.

Care Guide

  • Care level: Moderate — well suited to reef keepers with established, stable systems
  • Lighting: Low to medium — scoly corals prefer indirect, lower intensity light. Direct high intensity lighting will cause bleaching and stress. Shaded areas or lower rockwork bring out the best colouration
  • Flow: Low — gentle indirect flow is ideal. Strong direct flow will cause the coral to retract and can damage the fleshy tissue over time
  • Placement: Sandbed or lower rockwork — positioned where the full disc can be seen and appreciated. Allow adequate space around the coral as the tissue expands significantly when fully inflated
  • Temperament: Moderately aggressive — scoly corals can extend sweeper tentacles at night. Allow adequate spacing from neighbouring corals
  • Feeding: Scolymia respond very well to target feeding and benefit significantly from regular feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, reef roids, or small pieces of marine flesh 2-3 times per week. Regular feeding encourages faster growth, larger tissue expansion, and significantly more vibrant colouration. Feed after lights dim when the coral is fully expanded

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • Calcium: 380–430ppm
  • Alkalinity: 8–11 dKH
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350ppm
  • Nitrate: 5–15ppm (tolerates slightly elevated nutrients better than SPS)
  • Phosphate: 0.05–0.10ppm

Note: Scolymia are sensitive to rapid parameter changes. Stability is more important than hitting exact target numbers. Sudden alkalinity swings in particular can cause rapid tissue stress. Always adjust parameters gradually.
