If you've ever wondered why your corals aren't thriving despite doing everything else right — the answer might be flowing straight from your tap.

Tap water seems harmless. It's what we drink, cook with, and bathe in. But for a reef tank, it's one of the most common — and most overlooked — causes of algae outbreaks, coral stress, and long-term tank failure.

Here's why RODI water isn't optional for serious reefers, and how to get it right.

What Is RODI Water?

RODI stands for Reverse Osmosis Deionised water. It's produced by pushing tap water through a series of filtration stages that strip out virtually everything — leaving you with near-pure H₂O.

A typical RODI system includes:

  • Sediment filter — removes particles, rust, and debris
  • Carbon block filter — removes chlorine and chloramines
  • Reverse osmosis membrane — removes up to 98% of dissolved solids (TDS)
  • Deionisation (DI) resin — polishes the water to 0 TDS

The result? Water with a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) reading of 0 ppm — a blank canvas your reef chemistry can be built on precisely.

What's Actually in Your Tap Water?

Australian tap water is treated to be safe for humans — but "safe for humans" and "safe for coral" are very different standards. Depending on your location, tap water can contain:

  • Chlorine & chloramines — added for disinfection; toxic to beneficial bacteria and corals
  • Phosphates — a major driver of nuisance algae (hair algae, cyano, diatoms)
  • Silicates — fuel for diatom blooms, especially in new tanks
  • Heavy metals (copper, lead, zinc) — even trace amounts are lethal to invertebrates
  • Nitrates — can push your reef's nutrient levels out of balance from day one
  • Fluoride & other additives — unpredictable effects on sensitive coral species

The TDS of Australian tap water typically ranges from 100–400+ ppm depending on your state and local supply. Every one of those dissolved solids is a variable you can't control — and in a reef tank, uncontrolled variables cost you coral.

The Real Cost of Using Tap Water

Reefers who use tap water often experience a predictable pattern:

  1. Persistent algae problems — phosphates and silicates fuel blooms that no amount of scraping or chemical treatment will permanently fix
  2. Unstable parameters — inconsistent source water makes it nearly impossible to dial in your chemistry
  3. Coral stress and bleaching — heavy metals and chloramines cause chronic low-level stress, suppressing growth and colour
  4. Invertebrate die-offs — shrimp, snails, and other cleanup crew members are highly sensitive to copper and other metals
  5. Wasted money on supplements — you're constantly fighting contamination rather than building a stable system

The frustrating part? These problems often look like something else — a lighting issue, a flow problem, a disease. RODI water eliminates an entire category of variables so you can troubleshoot with confidence.

How to Check If Your Water Is the Problem

Before investing in an RODI system, test your tap water:

  • TDS meter — a cheap and instant way to see how many dissolved solids are in your source water. Anything above 10 ppm coming out of your RODI unit means your filters need attention.
  • Phosphate test — if your tap water tests positive for phosphate, it's almost certainly contributing to your algae issues.
  • Nitrate test — some Australian municipal supplies have measurable nitrates, especially in agricultural regions.

Setting Up Your RODI System

Choosing the Right Unit

RODI systems are rated by gallons per day (GPD) output. For most home reef tanks:

  • 50–75 GPD — suitable for tanks up to ~300L, or if you're topping off manually
  • 100+ GPD — better for larger systems, auto top-off (ATO) setups, or if you're making saltwater frequently

Key things to look for:

  • Membrane rejection rate — aim for 96%+ rejection
  • DI stage included — essential for hitting 0 TDS
  • Pressure gauge — helps you monitor membrane performance
  • Flush valve — extends membrane life significantly

Where to Install It

Most reefers install their RODI unit under the kitchen sink or in a utility room near a cold water line. You'll need:

  • A cold water feed connection
  • A drain line for waste water
  • A storage container or reservoir (a clean food-grade container works well)

Maintaining Your RODI System

RODI filters don't last forever. Here's a general replacement schedule:

RO membrane Every 2–5 years (monitor rejection rate)
DI resin When TDS rises above 0–2 ppm

RODI Water and Your Top-Off Routine

Evaporation removes only pure water from your tank — not salt or minerals. This means your salinity rises as water evaporates, and you need to top off with fresh RODI water only (never saltwater).

For consistency, pair your RODI unit with an Auto Top-Off (ATO) system. An ATO uses a float valve or optical sensor to automatically replenish evaporated water, keeping your salinity rock-steady without daily manual intervention. It's one of the highest-impact stability upgrades you can make.

Making Saltwater with RODI

When mixing new saltwater for water changes:

  1. Fill your mixing container with RODI water
  2. Add a quality reef salt mix and mix thoroughly (a powerhead helps)
  3. Allow to mix and aerate for at least 24 hours before use
  4. Test salinity (target: 1.025–1.026 SG or 33–35 ppt)
  5. Match temperature to your display tank before adding

Never add salt directly to your display tank. Always pre-mix.

The Bottom Line

RODI water is the foundation of every successful reef tank. It's not a luxury upgrade — it's the baseline that makes everything else work. Your dosing, your salt mix, your supplements — all of them perform better when they're built on a clean, consistent water source.
