When you're shopping for coral, you'll often see terms like "captive-spawned," "aquacultured," "maricultured," or "wild-caught." For new reefers, these labels can seem like marketing jargon. But they actually tell you something important about where your coral came from — and that has real implications for your tank's health, your success as a reefer, and the long-term sustainability of the hobby.

Here's what each term means, and why it should influence what you buy.

Understanding the Terms

Wild-Caught Corals

Wild-caught corals are collected directly from natural reef systems — primarily in the Indo-Pacific, Fiji, Tonga, and Australia's own waters. Collectors harvest fragments or whole colonies and export them to the aquarium trade.

Wild corals can be stunning — unique morphs, rare species, and colours that haven't yet been replicated in captivity. But they come with trade-offs.

Maricultured Corals

Mariculture sits between wild and fully captive. Coral fragments are taken from the ocean and grown on underwater frames or structures in their natural environment — still in the sea, but in a managed, semi-controlled setting. Common in Fiji, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands.

Maricultured corals are hardier than freshly wild-caught specimens because they've had time to recover from collection stress, but they're still ocean-grown and subject to the same disease and pest risks.

Aquacultured Corals

Aquacultured corals are grown entirely in captivity — in tanks, not the ocean. They may have originated from wild or maricultured stock generations ago, but they've been propagated (fragged, grown, and re-fragged) in controlled aquarium environments.

Captive-Spawned Corals

Captive-spawned corals are the gold standard. These are corals bred entirely in captivity through sexual reproduction — spawning events where coral colonies release eggs and sperm that are fertilised and raised from larvae. No wild collection involved at any stage.

Captive spawning is technically demanding and relatively rare, but it produces corals that are genetically diverse, disease-resistant, and completely independent of wild reef systems.

Why It Matters for Your Tank

Pest and Disease Risk

This is the most immediately practical reason to care about coral origin.

Wild-caught and maricultured corals carry a significantly higher risk of introducing pests and pathogens into your display tank. Acropora Eating Flatworms (AEFW), Montipora Eating Nudibranchs, Zoanthid Eating Spiders, and various bacterial infections are far more commonly introduced via wild or maricultured stock than aquacultured or captive-spawned corals.

Aquacultured and captive-spawned corals have typically been through multiple generations of captive propagation, reducing (though not eliminating) pest risk. They've also been observed in controlled environments where problems are more likely to be caught and treated before sale.

Bottom line: Always dip new corals regardless of origin — but know that wild and maricultured stock carries higher inherent risk.

Aquarium Adaptation

Corals that have been grown in captivity for multiple generations are adapted to aquarium conditions — artificial lighting, controlled flow, stable parameters, and the absence of natural seasonal cycles.

Wild corals, by contrast, are accustomed to natural sunlight, tidal flow variation, and the full complexity of a living reef ecosystem. Transitioning them to aquarium life is a genuine stress event, and some specimens never fully adapt.

Captive-grown corals tend to:

  • Acclimate faster to new tank conditions
  • Show less "shipping stress" bleaching
  • Respond more predictably to standard aquarium husbandry
  • Grow more readily under artificial lighting

Genetic Diversity and Resilience

Captive-spawned corals offer something unique — genuine genetic diversity from sexual reproduction. Most aquacultured corals are clones (produced by fragging), meaning an entire collection of "different" corals may actually be genetically identical.

Genetic diversity matters because it affects disease resistance, bleaching tolerance, and long-term resilience. A tank stocked with genetically diverse, captive-spawned corals is more robust than one filled with clones of a single wild-collected parent.

Why It Matters for the Reef

The global coral reef crisis is well documented. Climate change, ocean acidification, and direct human impacts have degraded reef systems worldwide. The aquarium trade, while a small contributor compared to climate change, has historically placed pressure on wild reef populations through collection.

Choosing captive-spawned and aquacultured corals over wild-caught reduces demand for wild collection. At scale, this matters — and as a reefer, you're in a position to vote with your purchases.

The good news is that captive-grown corals are increasingly available, often more affordable than rare wild specimens, and in many cases more beautiful — the result of selective propagation of the most colourful and fast-growing morphs.

This isn't an argument to never buy wild coral. There are legitimate reasons wild-caught specimens remain part of the hobby:

  • Rare species not yet established in captive populations
  • Unique wild morphs that haven't been replicated through aquaculture
  • Responsible, regulated collection from well-managed fisheries (Australia's own coral collection is among the most tightly regulated in the world)
  • Supporting sustainable collection communities in developing nations where reef fisheries provide livelihoods

The key is buying from reputable suppliers who source responsibly, provide accurate origin information, and support sustainable collection practices.

  • Healthy tissue — no recession, bleaching, or STN/RTN at the edges
  • Polyp extension — extended polyps indicate a coral that's settled and feeding
